What is Tatami Mat?

Tatami mat is a type of flooring material and is a Japanese unique culture not often seen in other countries. It is basically covered with woven soft rush straw, and the woven ends are covered with a cloth. A tatami mat is a rectangle measuring 3 ft by 6 ft. Japanese refer to the size of a room by the number of tatami mats that fit inside it.

Size standards
Various size standards depend on the region.
Kyoma tatami – Kyoto prefecture = 955mm x 1910mm (3.13ft x 6.266ft)
Ainoma “in-between size” tatami – Nagoya city = 910mm x 1820mm (2.99ft x 5.97ft)
Edoma or Kantoma tatami – Tokyo prefecture = 880mm x 1760mm (2.89ft x 5.77ft)

Due to the changes in interior design trends, most of the new housing in Japan is mixing traditional and western-style rooms. It is becoming common to make your home modern with one tatami room or tatami flooring in the living room.

Unit tatami mat / Oki tatami mat
There are specific tatami called Unit tatami mat or Oki tatami mat. They are tatami mats that can be placed in the space you want. It can be used as like area rug! The mainstream size is half tatami mat type, which is about 3′ x 3′. The thickness is thinner than the tatami mats in the Japanese-style room, which is about 1/2″. It is light and small, so it is easy to carry around and install even in a house with only flooring. You can also put it under your Japanese futon to stay comfortable..!

No shoes on
Culturally, the Japanese do not go into the room wearing the shoes. But.. Why does every Japanese take their shoes off at the entrance? Japanese, traditionally, took meals sitting in tatami rooms instead of chairs, and they used futons to sleep directly on the tatami flooring using Japanese futons. As they are very close to the flooring while eating or sleeping, it is not acceptable to bring their shoes into the house which would make the floor dirty.
